FF7 Revelation: Ultimate Mode Locked to the Elusive PS5 Pro

Versatility Mode and the latest firmware push the flagship console ahead of the pack

4K, 60 FPS, and a mode all its own: the PS5 Pro just scored VIP treatment for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. The catch? You’ll need to actually find the console before April 8, 2027.

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will feature a “Versatility Mode” exclusive to the PS5 Pro, combining 4K resolution and buttery-smooth 60 FPS thanks to PSSR tech. This news is bound to make stock hunters sweat even more, as the PS5 Pro cements itself as the go-to machine for demanding AAA games—just as the Remake trilogy’s finale draws near.

Exclusive Versatility Mode targets 4K at 60 FPS

Versatility Mode is powered by PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), Sony’s proprietary upscaling tech. In practice, the game renders at a lower resolution, then rebuilds the image in 4K using the PS5 Pro’s onboard AI, all while keeping a rock-solid 60 frames per second. It’s the best of both worlds—where the standard PS5 forces you to pick between eye candy and smoothness.

Naoki Hamaguchi, who’s already finished the game 46 times, doesn’t hide his preference. The director says, “Thanks to Versatility Mode and PSSR, the PS5 Pro could be one of the most recommended ways to play FF7 Revelation.” Still, premium console owners aren’t locked into just this mode: they’ll keep access to the three standard PS5 options:

PSSR gets a boost from the latest system update

The timing here is no accident. This month, Sony rolled out a firmware update adding an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option to the PS5 Pro’s video output menu. Enabled by default, this upgrade benefits all PSSR-compatible games—no player tweaks or extra dev patches needed. The result: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch with an already-refined PSSR, minimizing the visual artifacts that sometimes plagued early versions of the tech.

This puts PSSR head-to-head with AMD FSR and Nvidia’s DLSS, with the edge of being baked right into the system. For a game as visually ambitious as the Remake trilogy’s finale, every bit of image quality gained without sacrificing performance matters.

200 GB and a massive open world: PS5 Pro to the rescue

Naoki Hamaguchi has warned: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will weigh in at around 200 GB. That’s a testament to the project’s scale, with cities like Wutai and Mideel open for exploration and the freedom to soar across the world map aboard the Highwind. These rapid transitions—especially parachuting from the airship—will put asset streaming to the test, and that’s exactly where PSSR’s smart upscaling shines, easing the GPU’s load.

The game launches April 8, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Square Enix hasn’t yet said if the standard PS5 graphics modes will be identical on Xbox, leaving Microsoft’s experience a bit of a mystery. What’s clear is that the director keeps dropping new reveals about FF7 Revelation, teasing a game that’s ambitious on every front.

But here’s the real question: with the PS5 Pro nearly impossible to find in Europe and resale prices soaring, how many players will actually get to enjoy Versatility Mode on day one? The tech promise is mouthwatering—if Sony can sort out its stock woes by next April.
