GTA 6 Hype Sends PS5 Pro Prices Soaring: Impossible to Find One Under $1,370
You planned to snag a PS5 Pro before GTA 6 drops in November. But when you checked PlayStation Direct this morning, the page just said “unavailable.” And on Amazon.fr, the starting price is already over $1,200.
This is the reality for thousands of French gamers right now. The PS5 Pro has simply vanished from official sales channels in France, and it’s nothing new for Europe: Germany and Poland have been facing the same drought since late August. With just two months to go before GTA 6 launches, third-party sellers are setting the rules, with prices easily topping $1,370 including shipping.

$1,370 in France, $1,400 in Poland: prices go through the roof
It’s the same story across the continent. In France, PlayStation Direct shows a hopelessly empty page, with no hint of a restock. On Amazon.fr, only third-party sellers have consoles left: expect to pay about $1,200 for a used one, and no less than $1,370 including shipping for a new unit. In Germany, even the so-called “reputable” retailers are charging at least $1,290, while Amazon delivery times stretch from three to seven months. In Poland, the PS5 Pro is listed at around $1,400 at every major retailer—a price that’s basically become the new normal.

For context, Sony’s official recommended price is $899.99. So these current prices represent a markup of 45 to 55%—an unprecedented gap for a PlayStation console since the PS2 era. Even at the height of the PS5 shortage in 2021, secondary market prices rarely topped $800 for a console that retailed at $499. Here, the symbolic $1,000 line is smashed. What was once a mainstream product is now a luxury item.
GTA 6: the game that’s breaking the console market
The timing is no coincidence. On August 27, Rockstar Games and Netflix dropped a 25-minute GTA 6 gameplay showcase, and that’s exactly when stock started vanishing all over Europe. Sony has officially stated that GTA 6 will be optimized for the PS5 Pro, a promise that triggered a buying frenzy. Add to that the persistent rumor of 60 FPS exclusivity on PS5 Pro, and insiders talking about two distinct performance modes depending on your console model.
With the GTA VI: Take-Two Locks In New Release Date—The Wait Isn’t Over Yet set for November 19, players have barely two months left to gear up. The countdown is fueling a buying panic: many are willing to pay top dollar now rather than risk playing GTA 6 on a standard PS5, possibly locked at 30 FPS. One gamer summed up the anxiety: “If my console dies before GTA, I’ll just curl up in a ball and cry.”
Scalpers or real shortage? The debate is raging
There are two schools of thought. The first blames opportunistic resellers who use Amazon and eBay marketplaces to artificially inflate prices. One forum user summed it up bluntly: “$1,300? That’s just scalpers using the marketplaces. Anyone buying at that price is out of their mind—it’s just a stock issue.” In fact, the $1,290 and $1,370 listings come almost exclusively from third-party sellers, not from official retailers.
But the second view is more structural—and probably more worrying. Sony has already raised the official PS5 Pro price due to rising RAM and SSD costs, with those components being snapped up by AI-focused data centers. And it’s not just Sony feeling the pinch:
- The Xbox Series X is also out of stock in many European stores, with prices climbing as high as $865
- PS5 Slim models have seen moderate price hikes ($570 for the Digital Edition, $620 with disc drive in Germany)
- Supply in the US is reportedly just as bad
The truth is probably a mix of both: real industrial constraints shrinking supply, and resellers cashing in on the GTA 6 effect to maximize profits.
If Sony can’t restock official channels by November, the PS5 Pro could remain out of reach for a huge chunk of European gamers—right as the most anticipated game of the decade drops. It’s a paradox where getting the best gaming experience is as much about your wallet as your timing.
