Seven years. That’s how long it’s taken to go from the Midgar station to the cockpit of the Highwind. Today, Square Enix finally put a date on the trilogy’s final chapter: on April 8, 2027, Cloud and his crew’s journey will reach its conclusion.

When Final Fantasy VII Remake dropped on April 10, 2020, nobody expected to wait nearly seven years to see the story’s end. This September 3 State of Play finally ended the suspense. After a showstopping appearance at Gamescom 2026, Final Fantasy VII Revelation took center stage this Thursday: release date, brand-new combat system, a sprawling open world, and a dizzying amount of content.

April 8, 2027: the end of a 7-year wait

April 8, 2027. The date flashed in gold at the end of tonight’s trailer, putting months of speculation to rest. Almost seven years to the day after Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on April 10, 2020, and over two years after Rebirth in February 2024, Square Enix is finally closing the trilogy’s calendar. Spring 2027 is shaping up to be unmissable, and the chosen window puts Revelation far from the fall rush, giving it the spotlight it deserves.

But it’s not just the date that’s impressive—it’s the sheer scale of the project. Tonight’s presentation rolled out minutes of gameplay, showing off a massive open world, new mechanics, and never-before-seen areas. Square Enix isn’t just wrapping things up—they’re going all out to close the book in style.

A gigantic open world with the Highwind and Piko

If Rebirth already broadened the horizons, Revelation takes things to a whole new level. The Highwind, whose scale Hamaguchi previously teased, becomes available very early in the adventure. The legendary airship is both your ticket to freely soar over the planet and a customizable HQ that evolves as you progress. Just call, and the ship swoops in, ready to take off to any point of interest you spot from above.

On the ground, Piko—your personal chocobo—takes over. Far from just a decorative mount, Piko levels up alongside you and actively joins the fight. You can battle in midair on chocobo-back or dismount for classic combat. A grappling gun rounds out your traversal toolkit, letting you scale rooftops—even in urban zones—with ease. Airship, chocobo, precision parachuting, grappling hook: movement freedom hits a new high for the series.

The FITS system reinvents combat

The big gameplay innovation is called FITS. This outfit system lets you assign each party member one of four roles, radically changing their combat abilities:

The presentation showed Vincent as a Summoner, unleashing devastating combos with his entity, while Cid took on the Knight role, shielding the party. Both characters are finally playable, and their arrival deepens the synergy system introduced in Rebirth. The official video narrator calls Revelation the “definitive version” of the Remake series’ combat. The action-strategy blend remains, but FITS adds a new layer of customization that should keep every battle feeling fresh.

Wutai, Weapons, and a mountain of new content

When it comes to content, Revelation doesn’t hold back. Wutai, the warrior nation locked in open conflict with Shinra, stands out as a flagship zone. Its capital, fully explorable thanks to the grappling hook, boasts a unique vibe—you can even snap photos of the cats roaming its alleys. Geopolitical tensions with Shinra are at their peak, and Rocket Town joins the list of newly confirmed areas. The Weapons—those colossal creatures from the original—now appear as field bosses, awakened to defend the planet.

Side activities get a major upgrade. Queen’s Blood returns with a new saga starring Red XIII, and the fan-favorite snowboarding mini-game is back. Side quests now change story and gameplay depending on your chosen character: “as these changes stack up, they create unique narrative experiences for every player,” the official presentation notes. Faces from the Compilation also appear, including Cissnei. Hamaguchi has promised the true ending will be included, reassuring those worried about a cut-off finale. And for the impatient: a fast-forward option is now available during cutscenes.

With seven months of development left before April 8, 2027, Square Enix still has time to drop more surprises. But one thing’s for sure: the Remake trilogy isn’t going out quietly, and this final act is set to leave a lasting mark on the saga’s legacy.
