After Wolverine, Claws Make Way for Fangs: Venom Reportedly Returns on PS5

A symbiote never dies—it just waits for its next host.

The symbiote refuses to die. Despite swirling rumors of cancellation, Insomniac’s Venom game is reportedly still in the works, according to NateTheHate—a well-known insider for PlayStation projects.

Turns out, killing an alien parasite isn’t easy—even in real life. After Tony Todd, the unforgettable voice of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, passed away, and with Miles Morales’ actor hinting at the project’s demise, fans feared the worst. But on X, NateTheHate2 reassured everyone: the game is “still in development,” though he didn’t say when we might see it. The timing is curious, with a PS5 lineup more packed than ever and Wolverine dropping in just a few days.

NateTheHate pushes back against cancellation rumors

On September 4, insider NateTheHate2 posted a clear message on X: “Venom is very much still in development upon last check. As to when it’ll be announced, I don’t know.” Two sentences were all it took to revive a project many had already buried.

NateTheHate has built a solid reputation for PlayStation first-party scoops, though he’s not infallible. His wording—“upon last check”—hints at recent contact with someone close to the project, but also leaves room for uncertainty. Neither Insomniac Games nor Marvel Games have commented, and there’s been no official word about a standalone Venom game to date.

Why fans believed the game was canceled

The doubts didn’t come out of nowhere. Tony Todd’s passing—the iconic voice of the symbiote in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2—raised a practical question: how do you continue without the actor who brought Venom to life? Then, the actor for Miles Morales reportedly hinted the project was shelved after Todd’s death, fueling a wave of pessimism around the title.

Yet there were signs Insomniac had bigger plans for Venom. Only 10% of Tony Todd’s recorded lines were actually used in Spider-Man 2, suggesting a treasure trove of unused voice work for a future project. In today’s PlayStation ecosystem, a symbiote-focused spin-off makes perfect business sense. Plus, Insomniac’s take on Venom—Harry Osborn, not Eddie Brock—opens up a whole new narrative playground.

A tricky release window between Wolverine and Spider-Man 3

Even if Venom is on Insomniac’s roadmap, the big question is where it fits in an already packed schedule. Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, and the studio has confirmed work on Spider-Man 3. Here’s how Insomniac’s Marvel slate stacks up:

Three AAA Marvel projects for one studio—even with help from other PlayStation Studios teams, that’s a massive undertaking. Venom could still be in pre-production or prototyping, with no reveal planned for years. Insomniac’s silence, while all eyes are on Wolverine, isn’t surprising: the studio has no reason to steal its own thunder.

Only an official statement from Insomniac or Marvel Games will settle things. A PlayStation event in the months after Wolverine’s release would be the perfect window to finally lift the curtain—if the project is far enough along to show. Until then, you can always play as the symbiote in Spider-Man 2, available on PS Plus.
