State of Play Bombshell: Sony Revives a Cult Classic Trilogy
Twenty years after unleashing Kratos on PlayStation 2, Santa Monica Studio is heading back to where it all began. The Greek trilogy is getting a full remake, and it’s none other than the legendary voice of TC Carson who broke the news.
Rumors had been swirling for nearly a year—some whispered about remakes of the original three games, others about a 2D spin-off. The February 12 State of Play put all speculation to rest: Santa Monica Studio is officially working on a complete remake of the Greek trilogy, covering the three games that forged Kratos’s legend between 2005 and 2010. The announcement dropped right at the end of the event—Sony definitely saved the best for last.

The remake is real, but still in very early development
It’s no accident that Sony chose TC Carson to deliver the news. The American actor was the original voice of Kratos throughout the entire Greek saga, before Christopher Judge took over for the Norse reboot in 2018. His return after more than a decade sends a crystal-clear message: this remake is all about honoring the spirit of the originals. Carson didn’t just read a press release on stage—he slipped right back into the role, reminding a whole generation of gamers of the raw fury and gravitas that defined the original Spartan.
This casting choice goes way beyond simple fan service. It roots the project in artistic continuity and hints that Santa Monica Studio wants to recreate the Greek experience as it was, not just repackage it in the style of the newer games. That’s a huge relief for fans worried the classic trilogy would get filtered through the over-the-shoulder camera introduced in 2018.
The studio, however, was quick to temper the hype. “This project is still in the very early stages of development, so we ask for your patience—it’ll be a while before we can share anything more,” the official statement reads. But there’s a promise to keep the excitement alive: “When we come back with an update, it’ll be a big one!” In other words, don’t expect news anytime soon, but when it comes, it should hit hard.
Meanwhile: Sons of Sparta drops today
To help ease the long wait, Sony pulled a surprise move. God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D action-platformer developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, is available right now on PS5. The game dives into Kratos’s youth, during his brutal training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. The story is canon, written by the same team behind God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök.
Gameplay-wise, Kratos wields spear and shield, and taps into divine artifacts called “Gifts of Olympus.” The whole thing is wrapped in hand-drawn pixel art animation, packed with creatures from the unexplored corners of Greek mythology. TC Carson also returns as the adult Kratos, this time as narrator—his first performance in the franchise in over a decade. The standard edition is priced at €29.99, Digital Deluxe at €39.99. As part of Sony’s aggressive 2026 strategy, this shadowdrop proves PlayStation isn’t slowing down one bit.
The big questions still hanging in the air
The announcement may be official, but it leaves a mountain of unanswered questions. The biggest: will the three games be remade separately, or merged into one massive title? The gameplay debate is already splitting the community. Some fans are hoping for a return to the frantic fixed-camera action that defined the trilogy, while others are picturing a shift to the over-the-shoulder style of the Norse games. Santa Monica Studio hasn’t dropped a single hint, and it’ll probably be years before we get any answers.
No platforms have been confirmed either, though PS5 (or its successor) seems like a safe bet. As for timing, the total lack of gameplay footage suggests that seeing a release before 2028 or 2029 would be a miracle. Meanwhile, the franchise keeps expanding: a live-action God of War series is in the works at Amazon Prime Video, starring Ryan Hurst and Mandy Patinkin, with filming set for this year and a possible 2027 release.
Between Sons of Sparta playable today, the trilogy remake in the works, and a TV series on the horizon, Kratos’s saga has never felt more alive in this anniversary year. Patience will be tested, but Santa Monica Studio promises it’ll be worth the wait—and with their track record, it’s hard to doubt them.
