A Co-Op LOTR Game Just Shadowdropped on Every Platform!
Missing from digital stores since 2019, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has just reappeared out of nowhere. Its Legacy Edition is available right now on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2, and PC, featuring co-op for up to three players.
Aspyr Media pulled off a major move this Tuesday, August 11, announcing and launching this remaster of a 2011 action-RPG that many thought lost to time. A true shadowdrop in classic style, just like the recent God of War: Sons of Sparta. Originally developed by Snowblind Studios (which closed in 2012), War in the North offered a Middle-earth adventure running parallel to Frodo’s quest—and now it’s back with a slew of upgrades.

War in the North: the forgotten LOTR game rises from the grave
Back in 2011, Snowblind Studios delivered a unique vision of Middle-earth. Instead of a straight adaptation of Peter Jackson’s films or Tolkien’s novels, the studio chose to weave its own story, drawing from both worlds. Ruth Tomandl, the game’s producer at the time, summed up the ambition: “You meet familiar faces, but also brand-new characters and some from the books who never made it into the films. You really get the best of all possible worlds.”
The critical reception was mixed, with a Metacritic score of 61 on Xbox 360 and 66 on PC. But despite those lukewarm reviews, the game earned a cult following thanks to its co-op gameplay and original narrative approach. Snowblind Studios shut down in 2012, and the title was pulled from Steam in 2019. For seven years, it was impossible to get digitally—unless you had a physical copy and a seventh-gen console, it was pure gaming archaeology.
What’s new in the Legacy Edition (and it’s way more than a lazy port)
Aspyr Media didn’t just make the game available again. The Legacy Edition packs a set of real improvements that modernize the experience without losing its soul. The game now runs at 60 FPS on all platforms, and the interface has been totally reworked—with health, mana, and XP bars for every party member. Team management is way clearer.
Some of the best new features include:
- On-the-fly character switching in solo play—a feature missing from the original
- A revamped target lock system for smoother combat
- Autosave and extra save slots
- Gyro controls on PS5 and Switch
- Online co-op for up to 3 players and local split-screen for 2
Solo play has gotten a serious upgrade. In 2011, playing alone meant dealing with sometimes flaky AI teammates and no way to intervene. Now, being able to swap between the three heroes changes everything, giving you real tactical flexibility. The trailer below shows off these upgrades in action.
A one-of-a-kind LOTR adventure: fighting Sauron in the North while Frodo sweats it out in Mordor
What sets War in the North apart from most Lord of the Rings adaptations is its narrative angle. While Frodo and Sam are slogging their way to Mount Doom, another threat is rising in the North. Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron, is building a fearsome army in the ruins of Fornost. Enter a new Fellowship of three heroes with complementary skills: Eradan, a Dúnedain ranger skilled in stealth and archery; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster specializing in healing and area spells; and Farin, a Dwarf champion built for taking hits up close.
The adventure takes you through legendary Middle-earth locations—Rivendell, Lothlórien, the Lonely Mountain, Mirkwood—and lets you meet icons like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond. Players can also summon the Great Eagle Belaram for devastating aerial attacks. It’s a guilty pleasure that hasn’t lost its charm, even fifteen years later.
More LOTR remasters coming? Aspyr is already teasing what’s next
Beyond this unexpected resurrection, it’s a single line in Aspyr’s press release that really gets fans dreaming. “Fans can look forward to more classic Aspyr releases from this beloved franchise in the future,” the publisher teased. It’s hard not to immediately think of the legendary PS2 adaptations of The Two Towers and The Return of the King—burned into the memory of a whole generation of gamers. Aspyr, with its proven track record on Star Wars remasters, seems perfectly positioned to bring these classics back.
The timing couldn’t be better. Embracer Group, now holding the franchise rights, is orchestrating a full-blown Lord of the Rings gaming renaissance. Warhorse Studios—the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance—is working on a brand-new Middle-earth RPG, while Crystal Dynamics is reportedly developing another project in the same universe. War in the North is clearly just the first step in a much bigger plan.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is available now on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2, and PC for $19.99, with a launch promo at $17.99 until August 25. The perfect excuse to gather two battle buddies and dive back into a Middle-earth that’s still full of surprises.
